In the glorious era of the Mughal courts, when poets recited verses under marble arches and music floated through mirrored halls, silk from the forests of Bhagalpur travelled along royal trade routes. Its deep blue hue, dyed from natural indigo, was prized for symbolizing loyalty, divinity, and the calm strength of kings. Among the most cherished creations of that time were sarees woven with zari drawn from molten gold and silver threads, created by the master craftsmen of Banaras. Inspired by the floral gardens of Shalimar and Nishat, artisans wove borders blooming with intricate motifs—each petal, vine, and paisley narrating tales of prosperity and eternal beauty. The weavers labored for weeks: indigo-dyed tussar silk flowed like water, while the radiant zari border shone like celestial constellations. When she wore it at the emperor’s victory celebration, the court gasped, believing she carried the heavens draped upon her shoulders.
